Thank you very much for picking up We Two Losers Absolutely, Positively Have to Be Happy!
This is my third title published under Famitsu Bunko, following I Lent a Friend 500 Yen and He Offered His Little Sister as Collateral—What Am I Supposed to Do? and Even If I Reincarnated as a Side Character, Is It Okay If I “Capture” My Stepsister?
With every book, they’ve let me write exactly what I want to write at that moment, and I truly can’t thank them enough. Of course, there are plenty of difficulties along the way—but this time too, I had a blast writing it!
This story, We Two Losers Absolutely, Positively Have to Be Happy!, begins with both the protagonist and the heroine having tasted the bitterness of "defeat." I spent a lot of time agonizing over how severe that defeat should be and how much I should depict the "winners" who handed it to them—and I suspect that’s a point where readers’ preferences will truly split.
I considered depicting the winners in vivid detail and then following their downfall—packing in plenty of developments to make you think, “Serves you right!”—but to be honest, I don’t like making that the main course and relegating the protagonist and heroine’s relationship to a side dish. So this time, I focused single-mindedly on writing the protagonist and heroine.

Watching them get back on their feet after being hurt—and seeing how they sort through their feelings toward the "winners"—that emotional arc felt incredibly dear to me. The protagonist, Amou-kun, shows some ugly, pathetic sides of himself… but I actually like him a lot precisely because of that. It feels, I don’t know… kind of true to life. And there is still so much more I want to write about him—his male friends, and even an "older sister" figure whose existence I hinted at in this book… If I get the chance, I’d love to show you more. Someday. Vaguely. Someday.
As for the heroine, Sachika-chan—she’s just the ideal! Consideration! Charm! Kindness! Everything! …She’s that perfect "super-capable partner" heroine who drags the pathetic Amou-kun forward at full speed. If there’s a future for this series, I think it’d be even better if she could also lay bare the weaker, more human parts of herself. What is this, a report card-style evaluation?

First, Aroa-sensei, who took on the illustrations for this book. The color pages, the inserts—everything was wonderful with no weak spots, but I especially love Sachika’s design. I insisted (through the editor) that I wanted her to be the kind of character who really catches your eye, so seeing her turn out like this makes me particularly happy. The cover is adorable too! Next, I'd like to thank my editor, who has handled this work as well as my previous two titles. At times they were strict… or rather, this book involved extra strictness, and I relied on them a great deal. Personally, I believe a work should be polished as thoroughly as possible before it ever reaches a reader’s eyes, so I’m genuinely grateful for every pointed note—they gave me the confidence to send this book out into the world.
