Chapter Five: The Lord of Magic and the Villainess; the Prince and Cinderella (Extra Story)

Aides had never met a girl who fit the word “noble” as much as she did.

Strong willpower shone through her sparkling vermilion eyes. Her skin was as white as porcelain, and her face still bore some traces of youthful softness. Her petite figure and lovely appearance stood out under the dazzling lights of the party, captivating the attention of the other guests—she was Wellmy Ernest.

Aides first met her at her debutante ball. If not for the series of coincidences that had led them there, the two of them would likely never have met.

Aides had received a report stating that magic items similar to the ones that had killed his mother and sister had been discovered. Upon learning that the owner of those items would be attending that ball, Aides had used his authority to secure an invitation.

He stepped out of his carriage and, finding it too bothersome to ask the man and woman blocking the entrance to move, opted to go around them. As he entered the party hall, she suddenly bumped into him. Aides instinctively reached out to steady her, and their eyes locked. The color of her irises, glimmering with intelligence, made him pause. He searched his memories but couldn’t recall a girl like her among the Liroud line. Then again, it wouldn’t have been that surprising for him not to know of her; after all, given her youth, she had likely been born after Clartes had cut ties with his family.

Ẁ еb nǒ v ӗl Е̄ ǹ ů mа̇

The next instant, a saccharine, flirtatious smile curled on her lips, one far too mature for her age, and Aides immediately withdrew his hand. He detested that type of woman. Although he knew he had to marry to prevent the Ormirage bloodline from dying out, the very thought of partnering with such a woman irritated him to no end. If he were to spend the rest of his life with a woman, he wished she would be as zealous as he was—someone who would embrace his goal of eradicating cursed magic items to prevent tragedies like the one that had befallen his mother and sister, and who understood the meaning of living to help others.

Wellmy definitely wasn’t that woman. Everything about her rubbed him the wrong way, to the point he started to think that the glimmer of intelligence she’d seen in her eyes had been an illusion. She was just like those other women, who saw him exclusively for his title and appearance.

And so, he immediately lost interest and forgot about her after that exchange.

To think that it had all been an act...

Who would have thought that a sixteen-year-old could flawlessly play the role of what society perceived as an awful, wicked girl?

When he received that anonymous letter one fateful day, Wellmy’s face suddenly appeared in the back of his mind. The long letter was highly logical and well-organized, detailing a bold, clever plan.

Ёň um̂ a. і̂d̃

On the surface, it looked like a regular engagement proposal. It contained some praises of Aides, all of which were spot-on, and it was evident that the sender knew exactly what he wanted. The letter then elaborated on the talents of a certain noble lady named Iora Ernest and how beneficial she would be to House Ormirage. If whoever had written that letter was telling the truth, it was an exceedingly appealing offer.

But upon closer examination, that letter was a denunciation of Count Ernest’s unscrupulous practices. He had made his second daughter his heir when his first daughter was his legitimate successor, had neglected and tormented the latter, committed tax fraud, and made his people suffer. The sender of the letter stated that they wanted him to be punished for his crimes and had even included a detailed scheme explaining how to achieve that goal.

Aides gave it a glance and could tell that it would likely work. However, he could also tell that it wasn’t the sender’s only objective.

That letter was forged to look like it had been written by Iora Ernest...but Aides had an inkling it hadn’t been.

That was when he suddenly remembered the girl he’d met at that party two years prior. For some reason, those vermilion eyes that had seemed to search his very soul flashed into the back of his mind.

And so, he began his investigation.

Ѐ ṅ um ǎ

He collected evidence of Count Ernest’s wrongdoings and looked into the scandals involving his family. That was when he learned of Wellmy’s outrageous stunt with the boy who had called himself Iora’s fiancé at their graduation party. Her reputation was in tatters. The only good things he ever heard about the girl regarded her appearance or, rarely, her school papers. But according to the letter, those papers had all been written by Iora, not her.

But to Aides’s surprise, he didn’t hear a single positive rumor about Iora either. It was baffling.

How is this even possible?

Wellmy had good grades in all areas at school, not just those that required papers. Her knowledge, practical skills, and general education were all up to par. It was almost as if she were purposefully destroying her own reputation.

There’s no “as if.” That’s exactly what she’s doing.

A clever girl like her wouldn’t behave this way if her motivations were purely self-serving. Once Aides realized that her goal was to help someone else, he immediately understood what she was doing, and his hypothesis was confirmed during his conversation with Leo.

Wellmy was pretending to be that crafty, vicious villainess to protect and save her sister.

I’ve found her, Aides thought.

While he wouldn’t say that he had been looking for a girl like her his whole life, now that Wellmy’s motivations had become clear to him, he felt two emotions toward her: respect and yearning.

His first impression of her hadn’t been an illusion. Wellmy Ernest shared the same vision of the future as he did. Not only that, but she was about to succeed where he had failed.

The image of his mother and sister, whom he hadn’t been able to save, flashed through his mind. He hadn’t noticed what had happened to them, why they had suddenly started hating him when they’d been so kind his entire life.

Unlike him, Wellmy had understood everything. And she was doing everything in her power to rescue her sister. The intentions hidden behind that letter almost felt like Aides’s own feelings.

“Please save my sister.”

“She’s an amazing person.”

“I want to entrust her to you.”

“Because I know that you’re just as incredible as she is, and I trust that you will help her.”

It was almost as if he could hear those words coming from the letter.

Fine. I’ll meet your expectations, Wellmy Ernest.

Е̊n̊ u m̃ а̌.і̃ ď

After all, just like these sisters, he, too, had sought power to extend a hand toward victims of injustice. And he would use this power to help women like Wellmy, those who strived to make things right.

Following Wellmy’s plan, he welcomed Iora into his home.

Despite the efforts she had gone through to make herself look unsightly, there was no hiding her grace and natural beauty. Leo’s beloved showed up on his doorstep, accompanied by a single maid and holding only one suitcase. The moment she saw him, she lowered her head into a deep bow.

“Please... I do not care what happens to me, but lord of magic, I beg of you—please save Wellmy.”

It was the same plea as the one Wellmy would make to him later, at his party.

Having met Iora, he was able to confirm that she was just as brilliant as the letter stated, although she was also discreet and modest. She would make a good partner for Leo and a virtuous queen.

Ẅēb ñ о̀v e l _Ӗn̂ u m̀ а̊

“If you want to save her, you’ll need to help me,” Aides told her. “I’ll expose her plan...and make her my wife.”

At these words, tears streamed down Iora’s face.

The past was in the past.

Now, Wellmy was in Aides’s arms.

To think that a woman like her, who had orchestrated such a large-scale scheme and could easily play the role of a bold, malicious villainess, was actually inexperienced in romantic relationships and would blush at the slightest contact...

“You promised that you would do anything I ask, no?”

Dilarang mengopy novel dari Enuma.id.

The way Wellmy would bite her lip and try her hardest to fulfill his requests whenever he brought up her promise was so titillating, it made it nearly impossible for him to hold back.

Wellmy’s villainess act at the party must have tired her. After a bit of talking and teasing, she promptly fell asleep. Aides stroked her cheek, a smile playing on his lips.

This woman had brilliantly adopted another persona to make her wish come true. She had succeeded where Aides had failed.

From now on, I shall spoil her rotten.

It would be nice if, one day, their relationship evolved into one where they could truly understand the budding feelings they felt for one another.

The world wasn’t made only of good, virtuous feelings; there were just as many nasty, malicious emotions that drove individuals to use others or bring people down instead of bettering themselves, whether for their own gain, for someone else’s sake, or to achieve their goal.

Е́ n̄ um̂а

Curses were the greatest manifestation of that malice and would always be—even if one were to, say, use them to defeat a great evil and save the one they loved. Going against the law and killing someone would always bring repercussions that would throw the world into turmoil, creating a cycle of malice and revenge, with the one virtuous individual trying to end it becoming the one to suffer the repercussions.

Malice would never disappear for good, but Aides didn’t want to see curses driving others to act on these ugly feelings ever again. This was all at once a shackle, a wedge driven into his heart, and his very raison d’être. He believed that Wellmy would be willing to follow him down that path.

Together, they would endeavor to reduce the suffering caused by curses, even if only a little.

She was ready to sacrifice her own life to save her loved one.

She herself was pure, but she knew how to deliberately exploit even the murkiest malice. If Aides were to ever stray from his path, she would pull him right back. The two of them needed to support each other so that neither would get lost. After all, Wellmy would never agree to let Aides protect her without doing anything in return.

Pulling that admirable girl into his arms, Aides closed his eyes.

Four people were enjoying a surreptitious tea party at the Ormirages’ secondary estate.

“Let’s go on an outing, the four of us. A double date, if you will,” Aides suggested.

Wellmy, Iora, and Leo looked at him as if he were a rare beast they had never seen before, their thoughts coming to a simultaneous halt.

“What are those reactions?” the lord of magic asked, an amused smile tugging at his lips as he quietly took a sip of tea.

“Do you have a fever?” Wellmy asked. She would never have expected her fiancé to propose such an idea.

E n̄ ũ m̀а

“I never thought I’d hear the words ‘double date’ come out of your mouth,” Leo added, visibly taken aback.

“A date...” Iora whispered, her cheeks reddening.

Wellmy pursed her lips. “Oh, I see. You mean that I’ll be going on a date with Iora, while you and Leo go on a date together?”

“Of course not,” Aides said as he raised an eyebrow, amused by Wellmy’s possessiveness toward her sister. “I meant you and me, and Leo and Iora.”

“Absolutely not!” Wellmy reflexively exclaimed. She refused to see her sister and Leo flirt in front of her eyes!

She shot her fiancé a glare, but he simply chuckled in response. “Oh? Are you sure? Iora will soon be engaged—and later, married—to Leo, so it may be one of your last chances to go out with her like this. Besides, by turning down my proposal, you’ll be breaking your promise to do everything I ask of you.”

Lost for words, all Wellmy could do was groan.

Aides had a point. Once Iora became crown princess, she and Wellmy wouldn’t get many opportunities to go out in the city together—something they hadn’t been able to do so far.

Wellmy weighed her options. On one hand, she would have to see her sister act all lovey-dovey with Leo of all people... But on the other, she would get to go on an outing with her sister.

Seeing the serious expression on her face, Iora quietly spoke up, her cheeks still red. “Wellmy... I would like to go...”

“Of course, dear sister! Let’s go, then!”

Iora was so adorable, Wellmy immediately gave in to her pleading.

I never thought I’d get to indulge her whims!

She was slightly annoyed at Aides for including Leo in his plan, but oh well. Wellmy would let it slide this time. She would do anything in her power to grant Iora’s wishes. Besides, she was tired of being cooped up in Aides’s secondary residence; some fresh air would do her good.

Now that she thought about it, it would be her first time going out with Aides as well.

“It’s a date, then. I’ve secured some tickets for the new play being performed at the theater. We’ll be going the day after tomorrow. I have also made a reservation at a restaurant for after the show. It has an entertainment area with a wide variety of activities, like board games.”

“Efficient as always,” Wellmy commented before turning back to her sister. “Does that sound all right with you two? Ah, Leo, you don’t have to come if you have other plans.”

“You really don’t like me, do you?” the prince grumbled. “It’s fine. I’ll keep my schedule open at all costs.”

“Please don’t feel like you have to.”

“Oh, shut up, will you? And who knows? Maybe you’ll get too excited and fall ill right on that day.”

“What do you take me for, a child?! Of course I won’t!”

Iora smiled brightly while Aides smirked as the two of them watched their respective partners squabble.

Two days later, the four of them went to watch the play.

At the end of it, Wellmy was crying so hard that she’d needed to repeatedly dab her eyes with her handkerchief to keep her makeup from running.

“Wellmy, if you don’t stop crying, your eyes will get all swollen. You’re so pretty today, it would be such a shame,” Iora said in an attempt to comfort her.

“But...!”

The play had just been too beautiful!

It had recounted the story of a girl who had fought fiercely for her older sister, who was worried sick for her. After many misunderstandings, the two of them eventually reconciled, and they were both rewarded with a happy ending alongside their respective partners.

The play had reminded Wellmy so much of her own life that she had burst into tears in the middle of it and hadn’t been able to stop crying since.

Her hair was styled in a chignon, as always, but she had opted for a dress that differed slightly from her usual style: a deep purple gown adorned with silver embroidery. The reason she had chosen a dress of that color was simple: It reminded her of Aides and Iora.

The two of them shared very similar colors. But while Iora’s hair was straight and its silver hue could appear black or white depending on the light, Aides’s was wavy and a deeper shade of silver. Where her true purple eyes sparkled like starry gemstones, Aides’s were a calm periwinkle.

Wellmy had purposefully chosen a dress that reminded her of her beloved sister’s eyes. Knowing that they wouldn’t have many such chances to go out together in the future, she had insisted that Iora wear a scarlet dress with silver details, as red was Wellmy’s color. A fair number of people knew of Iora and Leo’s relationship, so he used his magical bracelet to disguise his hair and eyes the same way he had at the academy (the Lionels’ purple hair was just too conspicuous). Iora had completed her own outfit with a wide-brimmed hat and a veil to hide her face.

“I’m glad you enjoyed the play so much,” Aides said, clearly in a good mood.

“It was so good...” Leo said between sniffles.

While he hadn’t cried as loudly as Wellmy, his eyes were moist and he kept having to press against them to stop the tears from flowing.

W̊ е̇b̂ ň о̊vel̄ _Е nǔ mа

Aides raised an eyebrow in exasperation. “Why are you crying?”

“It reminded me of how awful things were before Iora accepted my marriage proposal... House Ormirage supplied the theater with the script for that play, didn’t they?”

“Wait. What?!” Wellmy exclaimed, her tears immediately stopping.

“Yes, I did.” Aides nodded with a small smile. “I commissioned a troupe I support to perform it. I figured getting the general public on your side would be the quickest way to silence the fussy nobles who have something to say about your situation.”

Blood rushed to Wellmy’s cheeks.

“W-Wait, so the characters in that play are inspired by...” she trailed off.

Eň u m̆.а

“Us,” Aides replied.

“I can’t believe it!”

How embarrassing!

The play had moved her to tears, but that feeling was quickly replaced by shame as she realized the implications of Aides’s revelation.

From an outsider’s perspective, Iora and Wellmy were the daughters of a fallen count—and worse, one who had committed a crime so grave that his house had been dissolved. It was nothing short of scandalous. There would inevitably be backlash once they became, respectively, the crown princess and the marchioness of a house whose influence extended well beyond the Lionel Kingdom’s borders.

I know that. I understand what Aides means, but...! A play based on their lives... That was just too unexpected.

Е̃n̊um̈ а̂

Iora rubbed her sister’s back, her own face crimson. Wellmy became so self-conscious of the gazes of the people around them that she kept her head low until she and Aides climbed into their carriage.

Once it was just the two of them, she lashed out at her fiancé. “Couldn’t you have at least told me about it?! What was that supposed to be? Some sort of humiliation ploy?!”

She had cried watching a play recounting her own life, and she was pretty sure the rest of the audience had connected the dots. After all, her confrontation with Aides at his party had been quite the loud spectacle, and nobles spent most of their free time gossiping. What was more, the rumor-loving idiots Wellmy had surrounded herself with at the noble academy had attended Aides’s party as well. Besides, if this play was Aides’s strategy to silence those who would criticize Wellmy and Iora, he would likely use his own influence to ensure as many people as possible knew about the incident that had inspired it.

Aides didn’t seem affected by Wellmy’s anger in the slightest. He sat with his legs crossed opposite her, a smirk playing on his lips. “You’re adorable when you’re embarrassed, Wellmy.”

“Don’t try to sweet-talk your way out of this! You just wanted to bully me, didn’t you?!”

“How vexing. To think that I went out of my way to get us premium tickets for the opening night of a popular theater troupe’s new play.”

“I’m talking about the. Contents. Of. The. Play!” Wellmy retorted, pausing between each word to really drive the point home.

“Ah, yes. It was quite nice, wasn’t it? The little sister’s bravery really resonated.”

Wellmy let out an infuriated groan at this.

“Now, now, there’s no need to get so worked up. It’s a good thing we went to see it before rumors began to spread, don’t you think?”

“If you dare tell anyone that I cried, I’ll beat you to a pulp!”

“Oh, that’s a good idea. I hadn’t planned on it, but I shall consider it.”

Wе̃ ḃ n̆ŏ v́еl̊ Еnu m а

This was no good. Wellmy simply couldn’t win against that man.

Knowing that continuing this discussion would just make her more embarrassed and sour her mood further, she chose to remain silent for the rest of the ride.

Having managed to swallow her embarrassment, Wellmy sat at the restaurant, relishing her dinner.

“What is this dish? It’s delicious,” she commented.

“White fish à la meunière,” Aides replied, taking a sip of wine. “Thanks to the newly developed cold storage magic device, we can now enjoy fresh ocean fish here in the capital. This particular fish pairs wonderfully with cheese and cream.”

Е n̈üm а̄

Iora nodded, impressed. “It’s amazing that cooling magical items can be used in this way...”

“From what I heard, it was originally developed for the army’s mage corps. At first, it wasn’t meant to keep food cold, but to cool down the recovery room for soldiers who suffered heatstroke. It proved so effective that hospitals soon adopted the technology as well.”

Then, civilians began using it—although it was only accessible to the rich at the moment. For the most part, people used it to deliver fresh ingredients to distant regions, store wine aboveground, and enjoy cool drinks even in the summer, as many needed to be boiled before consumption to eliminate bacteria.

“Give your fruit juices a try, Wellmy, Iora. They’re served chilled so you can enjoy them without ice, which would dilute the flavor,” Aides explained. He added that the refrigeration device was also necessary to store the aforementioned ice cubes.

Wellmy took a sip of juice. The strong flavor and coolness of it were nice and refreshing.

“The world is becoming more convenient by the day,” she commented.

W̊ е b̄ñ о̆_v е̄l Е̌ n̊u m̂ а́

“It’s amazing,” Iora added.

“The item you’re developing—the one that reduces magical strain—is just as marvelous an invention, Iora,” Aides said. “If you succeed in making it a reality, you might make spells and magic items accessible to everyone, not just mages. Even commoners.”

“Is that true?! You’re incredible, Iora!” Wellmy cheered.

Iora hung her head bashfully. “I didn’t do it alone. If I hadn’t received all the help I did, it would have remained nothing more than a theory,” she said, modest as ever.

The fact that she had even come up with that theory was already more than impressive enough. Wellmy hoped that Iora would realize that one day.

Most magic-hungry spells, as well as some items, were only accessible to mages and nobles, which explained in part how the latter were able to maintain their privileges. Certain cursed items were meant to weaken the target by gradually absorbing their magical energy, while others prevented them from using spells altogether. Using either on a commoner, who typically had a small pool of magical energy, could easily kill them.

At least, that was what Wellmy had learned at the noble academy.

“Iora has a gift for magic research. There’s no questioning it,” Aides said. “Most commoners should be able to activate refrigeration devices by themselves with small injections of magical energy over time. But with Iora’s strain-reducing device, they could technically use it continuously. It truly is a groundbreaking discovery.”

“Thank you kindly,” Iora replied. “Um... My ultimate goal is to make an item that doesn’t need human magical energy at all.”

“What do you mean?” Leo asked.

Iora finally raised her head and, with a smile blooming on her lips, explained, “In nature, there is something known as ‘mana.’ Humans continuously absorb it through their skin, then store it in the mana receptacle within their body, where it is converted into what we call ‘magical energy.’ Following that logic, I have been researching ways for those born with smaller mana reserves to use spells without strain, either by increasing the capacity of said receptacles using medicinal herbs and magic items, or by revising the structures of the spells themselves.”

She then noted that pursuing that logic even further meant that it might be possible to channel natural mana directly into the formula of any spell engraved into a magic item.

Еṅ ùm̊á

Wellmy hadn’t understood a word her sister had said. Yet, she could instinctively tell it was incredible. After all, it meant that even those without magical energy could use magic.

“If you succeed, then your name will go down in history,” she whispered in amazement.

“It will either way,” Leo butted in. “Her strain-reducing device prototype has revolutionized the world of mages, and she’s about to become crown princess of Lionel.”

“Oh, shut up, Leo,” Wellmy retorted. “Iora is twice—no, more than four times as amazing as those other mages, yet no one has recognized her worth yet!”

“I don’t disagree with you, but if you keep this up, I swear I’ll lock you up for lèse-majesté one day.”

Wellmy humphed. “Do it if you can! Aides won’t let you.”

“If you’re going to argue, at least say that you won’t let me...” Leo said with a grimace.

That earned him another humph.

Beside Wellmy, Iora had curled up on herself, her face crimson. She clearly wasn’t used to compliments.

Watching her with adoration, Wellmy retorted, “I will use anything at my disposal to achieve my goals—that’s the way I do things. Especially if it’s for Iora.”

“Right, I forgot about that part...”

Aides, who had been watching Leo and Wellmy’s squabble in silence, turned to Iora, his expression stiffening slightly. “But you will need to be more careful from now on. It would be best if you didn’t make too many public appearances after officially submitting your research.”

Ẁ е̂bn̆ о ve̊ l̀. Ё n̊ū m̂ а

“Why?” Wellmy asked.

“Her work will threaten the very foundation of noble privilege.”

A palpable tension filled the air at Aides’s response.

Nobles had gained their privileges by having more magical energy and being better at magic than commoners. The law protected them and their positions. Furthermore, the reason men had more power than women in noble society was that male children were weaker and more difficult to care for, meaning there were fewer of them. Each was considered valuable simply because of how rare they were. As for men who excelled at magic, they could be counted on one hand.

A recent study had proven that women generally had more magical energy, which explained why female children were usually healthier than their male counterparts. As a result, female nobles and commoner girls with strong magical energy were required to go to school. Teaching them how to prevent their magic from going awry or accidentally triggering, along with practicing proper spells, ensured the kingdom had access to a pool of talented individuals.

But if everyone could use magic, it would shake the foundations of noble society and threaten their vested interests. According to Aides, it might even lead to a revolution.

“Research shouldn’t be influenced by the kingdom’s interests. We will do our utmost to protect Iora, but you can never predict what one might do in a desperate situation. We can’t overlook the possibility of someone trying to assassinate her.”

“So Iora still isn’t safe...?” Wellmy muttered. She had rescued Iora from the abuse she’d suffered at the Ernest estate, but now her research had become so valuable that it threatened her life.

What should I do? Wellmy wondered.

An idea immediately sparked in her mind.

“I have an idea.”

“What is it?” Iora asked, cocking her head to the side adorably.

W е ḃ ǹ о̇ v̈ ě l̇ Еn̂ŭmа

A smile tugging at her lips, Wellmy explained, “We’ll create a faction to support you. While I’m not smart like you, I’m quite good at these sorts of things.” That was how she had gotten all of her followers at school, after all.

Wellmy’s reputation in noble society was terrible, but now, she had Aides’s backing. She would use his influence to her heart’s content to convince others that supporting Iora aligned with their own interests, ultimately strengthening her sister’s position. It was Wellmy’s duty to help Iora.

On the surface, House Ormirage seemed neutral and inconspicuous, but its influence rivaled even that of the king, extending beyond the borders of the Lionel Kingdom. If Wellmy were to create a faction as the Marchioness of Ormirage, all she would have to do was to act friendly toward Iora in public, and other nobles would draw their own conclusions. Wellmy needed them to think that, by disrespecting the crown princess, they would be making an enemy of House Ormirage as well.

“You don’t mind, do you, Aides?” Wellmy asked.

“Not at all. Do as you please. I know for a fact that your talents are more than worthy of the position of Lady Ormirage.”

Having received her fiancé’s permission to carry out her plan, Wellmy smiled, satisfied. Iora, on the other hand, seemed confused.

Е̊n̄ ŭm.ā

“W-Wellmy? Isn’t this a little excessive? You’re making far too much of a fuss over this. I’m not that valuable.”

“Of course you are,” Wellmy and Leo retorted at the exact same time.

Iora had so little self-confidence that she tended to underestimate her impact on others.

“Iora, you’re perfect the way you are, but I wish you would be a little more aware of the danger you’re facing,” Wellmy said.

Leo nodded. “I agree.”

“All right,” Iora mumbled. “I will try.”

She still didn’t seem to fully understand her circumstances, but no matter.

“We’re all done eating, so this conversation is over!” Wellmy declared, cutting the discussion short. “Let us play some games, shall we?” She’d been excited about this restaurant’s amusement section ever since Aides had mentioned it.

Cards, chess, billiards, darts... For the rest of the evening, Wellmy played with Aides and Iora (and Leo too, since he was there) to her heart’s content.

It was well past midnight when she and Aides returned to the Ormirages’ secondary residence.
