Chapter 59: A New Life
“...So this is where we'll be living...”
“Eula, this place is amazing!!”
While preparing the new house, there had been the unexpected incident of Saioji suddenly showing up and discovering my plans. Nevertheless, I had successfully secured a home for Eula and Aria to live in.
The three of us entered the royal capital through the South Gate without incident. Along the way, we passed members of the Dawnmoon Brigade and even the team house, but we didn't stop and headed straight to the new residence I had prepared in the Central District.

“Oh, that's a portable power station. It's basically a box that stores electricity.”
In the world of Asphial, people wear shoes indoors. Unlike Japan, there is no custom of walking around barefoot or in slippers inside one's home. Even when I received this house, it had been cleaned, yet there was still dust and dirt on the floors.

People lived the same way in the Brigade's team house. However, since that place functioned more like a hotel than a home, it never felt particularly strange.
Still, since I had finally bought a house of my own and was transporting various pieces of furniture from Japan, I wanted to recreate a Japanese-style living environment where shoes were removed at the entrance, and people could walk around barefoot indoors.
Because of that, Eula and Aria looked a little confused when I instructed them to take off their shoes at the front door. Once they saw how clean the floors were, however, they adapted quickly.
After entering and walking a short way down the hallway, we arrived at a spacious living room. The house I had purchased was only a single-story building, but it was quite large. I had replaced the original wooden windows with glass ones and added curtains, allowing plenty of sunlight inside and keeping the room bright even without electric lighting.

There was also furniture such as a sofa recommended by Saioji. However, Eula, who had been following behind me, seemed particularly interested in the jet-black box placed beside the entrance to the living room.
“E-Electricity...?”
“You don't have to worry. It's sturdy enough to withstand a bit of rough handling.”
Eventually, I wanted to install solar panels and generators. For the time being, however, many necessities—including the lighting—could be powered by large-capacity portable power stations, the kind normally used during disasters. The spare units were stored at my house in Japan, and several more were being charged there even now.

The mention of electricity surprised Eula, but the mysterious object—something unlike anything in this world—seemed to fascinate her. Since she would be living here from now on, it might be a good idea to teach her how to operate the portable power station later.
“Amazing! It's so soft!!”

Unlike Eula, who cautiously examined her surroundings, Aria dove headfirst onto the massive sofa in the middle of the living room, testing its comfort.
From my perspective, her childish appearance only made her look adorable. But Eula, apparently viewing herself as Aria's guardian, looked ready to break into a cold sweat as she watched the scene unfold.
“The faucet—turn this handle and water comes out. If it ever stops, there's a water storage tank in the garden. Just refill it. Make sure to clean it regularly, or it will get dirty. I'll also leave you some chemicals that help prevent contamination.”
“Yes, understood.”
While keeping an eye on Aria as she explored the house, I explained each item to Eula. Perhaps because of her meticulous personality, she carefully wrote down everything I said on sheets of paper she had prepared herself, despite literacy rates in this world being far from high.
Most of the equipment wasn't particularly complicated, but it would be troublesome if something were broken through improper use. At the same time, I didn't want them to hesitate to use things because they didn't understand them, so I made sure to explain everything thoroughly.

Besides the living room, the house had numerous other rooms. There were bedrooms for myself, Eula, and Aria, as well as a study, a workshop for brewing potions, and more. Naturally, there was also a bath and a toilet.
I really wish the toilet could have been a flush toilet, though...
The bath was similar to a traditional Japanese Goemon-buro. Instead of firewood, however, it used special stones that generated heat when infused with magic power.
As for the toilet, I had wanted a flush system, but installing one privately had proven impossible, so it ended up being a pit latrine.
Being a fantasy world, however, the waste tank was stocked with several slimes that consumed the waste. As a result, there was far less odor than I had expected, and there was no need to manually empty the tank, making it surprisingly convenient.
...That is, except for the fact that whenever someone used the toilet, the slimes squirming around underneath produced wet squelching noises from below.
