Chapter 48: Behind the Cultivation of Magic Roses
From 4,000 Magic Roses, we managed to extract enough potion liquid to fill two small vials. If we had used the same method as when we created the Purple Potion, I doubt we would have even produced a single vial.
One of the Red Potions we extracted—far more than expected—would be kept by me, while the other would be sent, through Akira, to a research institute under Chairman Ryugen's organization. Unlike the previous potion, whose color was somewhere between red and purple, the Red Potion we made this time was a proper red, though slightly darker in shade.
The finished Red Potion was stored in a beautiful, highly transparent crystal-cut glass container. Judging from its appearance and color alone, it could easily be mistaken for a bottle of perfume.
However, although the Red Potion was finally completed, it happened on the very last day of the deadline. According to the operators of the Royal Capital Black Market, the public exhibition of the elf slave would end this evening, after which they would move on to the next city. And still, there had been no news of anyone purchasing the elf slave.
During the past month, while I had been cultivating Magic Roses alongside people like Akira, I had also been quietly making various preparations to welcome the elf into our care.

The first issue was securing a place for the elf to stay. According to what I had heard, there would be another companion accompanying the elf. Apparently, that person suffered from some kind of illness, and the elf had voluntarily chosen to become a slave in order to save her companion.
Because of that, I needed to prepare a residence where both the elf and this companion could live. Along with another matter I wanted handled, I decided to ask Sakakibara, who was studying at Enfive Magic Academy, for help.

"An elf slave, huh? That's practically straight out of a light novel..."
"Honestly, I was looking for a trustworthy employee who could keep secrets rather than a slave. This is just how circumstances ended up."
Unlike when I met Rey Castiano before, I had come not to the Eagle Dormitory but to the Lion Dormitory, where Sakakibara lived.
While the Eagle Dormitory's interior was themed around deep green, the Lion Dormitory was decorated primarily in red. Other than that, their basic structure was almost identical.

We reserved one of the many reception rooms and met alone. Sitting across from me was Sakakibara, who seemed noticeably more relaxed than before.
"If you're just looking for a place to live in the royal capital, couldn't you handle that without asking me?"
"That's true, but considering who we're dealing with, and since I have another favor to ask, I thought I'd consult you."
"Another favor?"

As always, Sakakibara carried herself like the princess of this kingdom. Around others, she maintained a cool, composed demeanor befitting her appearance, but ever since our first meeting, she had gradually become more natural around me.
"Yeah. If I end up purchasing the elf, it'll definitely attract attention. So I was thinking about becoming a merchant under a different identity."

"Ah, that's definitely something only I can help with."
Honestly, finding a place for the elf and their companion to live was something that money could more or less solve.
Compared to Erakton and the regional cities, rent around the royal capital was absurdly expensive, but unless you insisted on an exceptionally prime location, it was manageable as long as you had enough money.
The other favor I wanted from Sakakibara, however, wasn't something money could solve. The moment she heard me say that I wanted to become a merchant under another name, Sakakibara—sitting perfectly upright on the sofa opposite me—immediately understood.
"If it's the addition of a new family registry identity, that won't be a problem. Shinjo-san, you've helped me a great deal, so I'll arrange it."
"Thanks. That really helps."

The world of Asphial—or more specifically, the Kingdom of Cainliese—maintained a very thorough family registry system. Even in remote villages near the borders, every individual was properly registered.
Furthermore, guild cards issued to adventurers and merchants were linked directly to these registry records, making it normally impossible to register under a false name.
There were, however, a few exceptions. One of them applied to Transferred Individuals like Saioji.
People who had physically arrived in this world from another were known as Divine Children. Although they were required to undergo inspection and registration in one of Cainliese's major cities, obtaining a family registry was relatively easy for them.
Ordinarily, it was difficult for refugees or immigrants from foreign countries to gain Cainliese citizenship. However, Divine Children like Saioji often possessed exceptional magical power and powerful blessings, making them valuable military and human resources, and thus they received special treatment.
As for me, I was a reincarnate rather than a transferred individual, so I did not qualify as a Divine Child. Officially. I was just an ordinary citizen of the Kingdom of Cainliese.

So how could someone like me obtain a new identity under another name? The answer was simple. The kingdom had to grant special permission.
In principle, the Kingdom of Cainliese was governed by the rule of law and functioned much like a constitutional state. However, in true fantasy-world fashion, the royal family stood above even the law.

That said, approval wasn't granted simply because a royal said so. There had to be various justifications and official reasons. Most often, permission was given when it served the interests of the state or demonstrated selfless devotion. In reality, however, many such approvals were the result of behind-the-scenes negotiations and deals.
This time, I wanted to purchase the elf slave without drawing attention to the Dawnmoon Brigade. In this world, owning slaves was not considered inherently evil, but I wanted to be cautious.
There was also the fact that slavery was prohibited in some countries outside Cainliese. If we ever found ourselves operating abroad in the future, there was a chance that having members of the brigade known as slave owners could cause us problems.
And so, I decided to ask Sakakibara—one of the royal family of this kingdom—to arrange a new family registry for me under a different identity.
