Chapter 45: The Saioji Main Family and Branch Family
This time, because we were planning to cultivate nearly 4,000 roses, the land I borrowed from Grandpa Genji was enormous.

The one speaking so confidently was Kida, a part-time employee at the only convenience store in Akane Village.
While he usually worked at the convenience store, his family ran a farm, and he often helped with agricultural work depending on the season. For this project, he was an invaluable ally.

Only a few days later, several trucks carrying rose plants still in their bud stage arrived in Akane Village as Akira had arranged beforehand.
Since the village was surrounded by mountains, even reaching it from the nearest town, Saiba Town, required navigating narrow and treacherous mountain roads. Large trucks couldn’t make the journey. Because of this, Akira had gone out of her way to arrange several medium-sized trucks instead.

Ordering someone to prepare 4,000 rose plants sounded simple enough in words, but in reality, it was an outrageous request. That was why I had wanted to handle everything else myself. Though, honestly, I had relied heavily on Grandpa Genji and Kida. After the first day, however, I had done most of the farming work personally.
Several trucks lined up along the closest road to the field, while staff members carried containers of roses through what was practically an animal trail. I joined them, carrying containers filled with roses. At the same time, planting work was already underway throughout the prepared fields.
“...Akira-san, can I ask you something?”
“What is it?”
While watching the planting operations from the edge of the field, I spoke to Akira-san, who had come all the way to Akane Village.

The main reason I had rented land and prepared these fields was because my employer, Saioji, had strictly ordered me not to tell anyone about the Magic Roses except Akira and Chairman Ryugen.

“Since they operate the same corporation, they appear friendly on the surface. However, Ryugen-sama, the head of the main family, and Oukai-sama, the head of the branch family, regard each other as rivals.”
“If they’re rivals, then why did Chairman Ryugen put the branch family in charge of the institute?”
That part puzzled me. If they were truly rivals, why entrust such an important facility to them? If Chairman Ryugen or Akira had been in charge, Saioji probably wouldn’t have been so worried about the institute.
At my question, Akira answered with an expression as though she had bitten into something bitter.
“Do you remember the man standing beside me when we were in Saiba Town?”

“Yes. The really huge guy, right?”
Saiba Town was where I had first met Chairman Ryugen. I remembered seeing a massive, heavily built man in the conference room that day. Like Akira, he had supposedly been one of Chairman Ryugen’s bodyguards.
“His name was Owada,” Akira’s voice hardened, “To put it bluntly, he was a spy sent by the branch family. After the incident in Saiba Town, he disappeared, and information was being leaked to the branch family.”
