Chapter 44: Akane Village Potion Farm

“H-Honestly, that was awful…”

Even for an adventurer with excellent stamina, the commotion in the central district—almost as if a riot had broken out—seemed to have been too much for Aina.

Some customers even tried to force their way back through the crowd just to catch another glimpse of the elf, causing the flow of people to churn chaotically. Whenever it seemed like we might make it out, we would be pushed back again. While I managed somehow, Aina, being shorter, had her red hair completely messed up by the surging crowd and looked thoroughly exhausted.

I was tired as well—far more than anyone should be after mere sightseeing—but more than that, I felt as though fate itself was at work.

An elf as the store poster girl… sounds good.

At first glance, she had seemed rather unfriendly, but if a store employed an elf, I had no doubt it would become a major topic of conversation throughout the royal capital.

I didn’t know why she wanted a Red Potion. She showed no signs of injury from her appearance. However, since a Red Potion was listed as an absolute requirement, perhaps someone close to her had suffered a severe injury beyond the healing capabilities of a Purple Potion.

But before worrying about that, there was a more immediate problem. Could I even prepare a Red Potion?

“So that girl’s staying in the royal capital for a month, huh?”

“Well, Red Potions are incredibly rare. She’s probably traveling around different countries looking for one.”

Red Potions were said to be discovered only once every few years, and in recent times, their appearance rate seemed to have dropped even further.

That was only natural. The dungeons that existed throughout the world had gradually been conquered one after another. Since no one could manufacture these potions, the total number in existence was fixed. The more that were found, the fewer remained. Simple enough.

...But I might be able to make a Red Potion.

If she was searching for one, then either she or someone close to her was likely suffering from some kind of injury or illness. Otherwise, she wouldn’t risk herself to such an extent just to obtain a Red Potion.

Even if an elf becoming a slave was involved, I doubted that was truly equal in value to a Red Potion. If judged purely by monetary worth, the Red Potion was probably more valuable.

At the same time, however, I found myself remembering my conversation earlier that day with Maxwell, the tall and slender adventurer. Even now, there were people still hoping for regenerative treatment. Perhaps because of that, my perspective on potions had begun to change.

And so, setting aside all thoughts of slavery, I wanted to help her. Maybe deep down it was because she was an elf, one of those special beings.

“Thank you very much, Genji-san.”

“It’s fine, it’s fine. Most of that land isn’t being used anyway.”

The first thing necessary to create a Red Potion was land for cultivating Magic Roses, the key ingredient.

At first, I had considered using my [Interworld Travel] ability to grow them in an unknown world where nobody could find them. However, after seeing that fifty Magic Roses yielded only a few drops of imitation Red Potion, I realized that producing even a single bottle would require an enormous amount of farmland.

Could an agricultural amateur like me accomplish that within a month? I wouldn’t say it was impossible, but it was certainly extremely difficult.

To produce roughly the amount contained in a typical bottle of eye drops, nearly four thousand Magic Roses would be needed. The number might vary somewhat depending on my skill and harvesting techniques, but at this scale, it was simply beyond what one person could handle.

Through Akira, I had already checked with the Leaf Research Institute. They currently possessed around five hundred plants. Even if I gathered every one of them, I would still need another thirty-five hundred roses. That was far beyond what an individual could prepare.

Even someone as capable as Akira said it would take at least a week to gather that many, meaning the actual cultivation period available to me would become even shorter.

At this point, one might wonder, Why not simply collaborate with the Leaf Research Institute, which was already researching the world of Asphial? The problem was that Saioji had strictly ordered me not to report anything about the Magic Roses to the institute. As things stood, even if I wanted to cooperate, I couldn’t.

That said, regarding the matter of the Magic Roses, she had told me it would be acceptable to discuss it with Akira and Chairman Ryugen, Saioji’s father. It seemed Saioji had her own concerns regarding the Leaf Research Institute.

And with that, the conversation returned to where it had begun.

“I probably won’t need the full month. Once I’m done, I’ll clean everything up properly and restore the land to its original condition.”

“You really don’t need to worry so much. It’s wasteland to begin with. Use it however you like.”

Even after moving my residence to Tokyo, I still maintained ties with the people of Akane Village, where I had first arrived.

There was no complicated reason for it. I simply felt comfortable there.

In my previous life, I had originally come from a rural area. After that, I spent nearly twenty years in the world of Asphial. Because of that, Tokyo—with its towering skyscrapers of steel and endless crowds of people and goods—felt overwhelming. As someone from the countryside, spending too much time in Tokyo could be exhausting.

Calling Akane Village “moderately rural” would be an understatement—it was far more remote than that. Still, I already knew the area well, and more importantly, I could walk around outside without drawing suspicious looks.

On top of that, I was acquainted with many villagers, including Grandpa Genji. For those reasons, I still visited Akane Village from time to time despite now living in Tokyo.

And when I began looking for land to cultivate the roses, I brought the matter to Grandpa Genji, the largest landowner in the area around Akane Village. That was how things came to this.
