Chapter 4: Reincarnated and Transferred
Besides reincarnates like me, there are also many transmigrants in this world—people who were transported to Asphial just as they were.
Their numbers are greater than I had imagined. Even in a small town like Erakton, there is usually at least one or two of them.
The common trait shared by reincarnates and transmigrants is that, compared to the natives of Asphial, they generally possess greater physical abilities and larger reserves of magical power. Some are also blessed with powerful divine gifts. With a few exceptions, people from other worlds tend to be stronger than ordinary residents of this one.
Because of that, many of them become adventurers, a job where they can make full use of their abilities. The next most common path is becoming a mage. In a world where talent matters greatly, most reincarnates and transmigrants can become successful as long as they stay away from crime.
Since I rarely leave Erakton, I don't often meet other reincarnates or transmigrants myself, but stories about them frequently reach the town.

"What is it, Greu?"
"It's the Black Princess. She actually came to this town..."

Starting with Greu, everyone who had been drinking in the tavern suddenly fell silent.
The silence was so complete that it felt eerie.
Following Greu's gaze, I looked toward the entrance and saw a group standing there.
...That's a transmigrant. And a Japanese one at that.

At the center stood a young woman dressed entirely in black, with glossy black hair uncommon in this country, flowing like lacquer in the darkness of the night.
Around her stood several tall women wearing matching black equipment, keeping watch on their surroundings.
The moment I saw her, I instinctively recognized her as someone from the same homeland as me.
"Man, she's beautiful. I'd heard the rumors, but..."

"Yeah. No kidding."
Even in a world where attractive people seemed unusually common, she was a peerless beauty capable of drawing every eye in the room.

Her pure white skin contrasted sharply with her long, silky black hair that reached her waist. Combined with her sharp, determined eyes and gothic black clothing, she was the sort of person anyone would notice instantly.
Her companions were all women clad in first-rate armor worthy of high-ranking adventurers.
The entire scene had the extravagant elegance of a theatrical troupe.
"They said she was some princess from a foreign kingdom, but seeing her in person, she's every bit as beautiful as the rumors claim."
"The people around her look like a royal guard. They're intimidating."

The women occupied one corner of the tavern as though they were bodyguards protecting a noble. Their presence brought an unusual tension to the normally noisy establishment.
"...So this is the manga that's become so popular lately?"
"Yep! It's the most popular series in Weekly Champ! I read it too!"
About ten kilometers from the Moon Gate hidden near Akane Village, stood a convenience store with a ridiculously large parking lot, surrounded by vast rice fields.
In a region where time seemed frozen in the Showa era, it was the only place that felt like modern Japan.
The store stocked the latest fashion magazines and weekly publications.

One of the few young people in the village, a part-time night worker named Kida, worked there.
"Thanks for ordering these for me. I haven't really kept up with manga recently."

"No problem! I love manga too, so I'm glad you're interested, Allen!"
The manga in my hands was the first volume of Yume Koi, an extremely popular romantic comedy series that Kida insisted was one of the best-selling manga in recent years.
The reason I bought it was simple.
It was bait to help me approach the transmigrant known as the Black Princess.

At the tavern, making contact with her directly would have been difficult. The women who admired her closely watched everyone around her.
Besides, I doubted something like the cheap chocolate I intended to sell would attract her attention.
And from a practical standpoint, handing food to a stranger in another world wasn't a great idea. Anyone would be suspicious that it might be poisoned.
So instead, I decided to bring something more likely to interest a girl her age from Earth.

That was why I chose Yume Koi and a women's fashion magazine.
Compared to Earth, entertainment in Asphial was severely lacking.

For someone who used to live in Japan, life here could be difficult.
Unlike me, who had gradually adapted after being reincarnated and growing up here, transmigrants had been suddenly torn away from modern society.
Surely they would be starved for entertainment.
At least, that was my assumption.
"Are you sure about this? This is a women's fashion magazine."
"Yeah. That's exactly what I need. Someone I know asked me to get it."

Kida looked a little puzzled by my purchase but accepted my explanation and handed me the package containing the books.
I spent quite a bit of money on all of this. Please let this work...
Since I had no idea what the Black Princess's tastes were, I had also ordered a variety of other books, including shonen manga and light novels.
The problem was that my only income came from helping the elderly villagers with odd jobs.
Even spending a few thousand yen hurt my wallet.
Praying that these items would catch the Black Princess's interest, I picked up the package and stepped through the Moon Gate.
