Chapter 36: Regular Meeting
“Next.”
“The survey of the dungeons surrounding the royal capital has been completed. Several teams are scheduled to begin dungeon expeditions the day after tomorrow.”
Inside the meeting room located in one corner of the team house, a large chamber capable of holding more than thirty members, several brigade members—including myself—had gathered.
Responding to Saioji’s brief prompt, the person who stood up with documents in hand was Vice Captain Laphine, a woman with white hair that contrasted sharply with Saioji’s.
The meeting being held by the Dawnmoon Brigade today was the regular conference attended by the leaders of the brigade’s adventuring parties. Each party consisted of five people, and each had its own leader. All of those leaders were present.

Laphine, whom Camille and the others had described as someone who disliked men, read through her report with a firm and dignified demeanor. In addition to serving as vice captain, she led one of the brigade’s strongest parties and was personally regarded as one of its most powerful members.

At first, I had braced myself for some kind of hostility because I was a man. I had even prepared myself to be bullied. Surprisingly, though, she did nothing. She neither showed any dislike toward me nor ignored me as if I didn't exist.
That said, I couldn't exactly say that she viewed me as a comrade either.

“Okaaay, next is the Magic Division~”

Interrupting my thoughts, Saioji prompted the next report after hearing Laphine's.
The next person to stand was a tall, mature woman, even taller than Laphine. A purple-haired woman named Nana, whom Camille had previously mentioned during our visit to the Royal Academy District. She was the brigade’s only graduate of a religious school.
Nana was a priest capable of using both the extremely rare Holy Magic and Healing Magic. Some even rumored her abilities surpassed those of Captain Saioji and Vice Captain Laphine.
Officially, she held the position of Magic Division Leader, but in practice she was effectively the Dawnmoon Brigade’s number three.

Speaking in her characteristically drawn-out manner, she picked up her report and began explaining.
“Since Allen joined the brigade~, we've received looots of inquiries from male adventurers~... but none of them seemed promising~, so we rejected every single application~.”

“Yeees~, however... I'd like to recommend one person to the captain~.”
With that, Nana signaled to a member seated behind her, who distributed additional documents. The papers contained the profile of the person Nana wished to recommend.
“Who is this?”
“Her name is Piana Eshan~, from a knightly family~. She has excellent aptitude for healing magic~, and with six months of training~, I think she'll become useful~.”
“...A second healing mage.”

One of the other party leaders muttered those words.
“If this girl Piana really becomes a healing mage, the brigade's strength would increase considerably... but are you sure?”
For Saioji, it was a surprisingly vague question.
Nana answered with a faint smile.
“Yes~, she definitely has talent~, but I'm the only one who seems to have noticed it~. If we're going to secure her~, now is the time~.”
Perhaps this was something only an active healing mage like Nana could properly judge.

I wasn't entirely sure what she meant by "secure," but it was probably similar to recruiting a promising talent before others noticed their potential.

The Dawnmoon Brigade required its members to pay a certain contribution fee. In practice, this meant a fixed percentage was deducted from quest rewards and item sales.
The exact rate varied depending on the member. Generally speaking, mages enjoyed lower contributions and more favorable contract terms. The reason was simple: mages were both rare and valuable.
Thus, although Luca and Lazuli had joined much earlier, Camille, who entered the brigade later, actually enjoyed a better contract.

As for me, I was employed as a merchant, so the brigade paid me a salary instead. While modest by the standards of merchants in the royal capital, it was exceptionally generous for an apprentice merchant. Whenever I went adventuring, however, I fell under the standard member contract.
Ironically, the member receiving the best treatment wasn't Captain Saioji or Vice Captain Laphine—it was Nana. This was because she wielded not only magic but also the even rarer Holy Magic and Healing Magic.
Many believed that if she announced she was transferring to another team, multiple brigades would immediately offer terms far better than what she currently received. That was why nobody objected when Saioji proposed generous conditions for Piana, a girl who had high potential to become a healing mage.

“Yes!”

Once Nana sat down, Saioji, acting as chairperson, called for the next report.
The person summoned was Aina, leader of the Supply Division. Looking somewhat nervous, she sprang to her feet and began speaking in a clear voice.
“W-With yesterday's incident resolved, all brigade logistics have been completely organized. We've also secured a blacksmith.”
“I see. Anything else?”
“O-Other than that...”
Apparently, she hadn't expected Saioji to press further.

Aina flipped nervously through her documents, searching for anything she might have forgotten to report.
“I have one report to make.”
“What is it, Allen?”
The brigade wasn't exactly one big family, but compared to most teams, everyone got along remarkably well. Of course, with this many people, there would inevitably be occasional friction, but never enough to make the atmosphere hostile. So even if Aina's nervousness slowed the meeting slightly, nobody minded. Still, I felt bad for her, so I raised my hand.
“Regarding the potions used by the brigade, I have a small report to make.”
As I distributed the documents I'd prepared in advance, I also presented a sample of the new potion developed in Japan.

Having lived in Japan before, Saioji immediately understood what she was looking at.
Inside the translucent white pouch was a vivid green liquid resembling thick vegetable juice, the distinctive appearance of potion fluid.

“This is a new potion container. Compared to conventional glass bottles, it's far more durable and takes up much less space. More importantly, there's the matter of its usable lifespan.”
When I prompted everyone to turn the page, the entire room flipped their documents at once.
“...A potion lasts a whole month?”
“That's ridiculous. There's no proof it can last that long.”

Considering that conventional potions generally remained effective for only about a week, the claims in the report were difficult to believe.

As the room erupted into chatter, Saioji sharply clapped her hands.
“I understand your doubts... but would someone really tell a lie that can be disproven in just one month?”
“Well...”
“In that case, carry both the conventional potions and Allen's new potions for the next month. The results will become obvious on their own, won't they?”
As the discussion threatened to spiral into an argument, Saioji forcefully brought it under control.

For adventurers, potions were effectively their only reliable method of recovery. There were people like Nana who could heal injuries with magic, but most adventurers relied entirely on potions when wounded. That was precisely why everyone always carried some of them and treated them with such care.
Under those circumstances, it was difficult to simply accept it when an unfamiliar newcomer announced that he had developed a new potion and expected everyone to switch immediately. So, Saioji ordered everyone to carry both the old and new potions simultaneously.
It would be somewhat wasteful, but it would provide a fair test.
As a result, the leaders' resistance was kept to a minimum, and my newly proposed potion was adopted—at least on a trial basis.
