Chapter 35: Development of New Potions
“Maintaining our stock of emergency potions really is expensive...”
Using a spreadsheet program developed by a certain company famous for Mado OS, I clicked away with the mouse and entered figures on the keyboard while reviewing the brigade’s finances. Several entries stood out in bold dark-red text among the generated results.
In the spreadsheet software I was currently using, the brigade’s expenditures were displayed, and any item shown in bold red indicated particularly large expenses.
Originally, administrative work related to the brigade had been handled by Saioji or Aina, the quartermaster. However, the workload was enormous, and neither of them possessed specialized accounting knowledge.
It wasn’t exactly sloppy bookkeeping—both Saioji and Aina kept reasonably careful records—but once the numbers were processed on a computer, a number of issues that needed improvement became apparent.

And the item that caught my attention this time was the brigade’s potion expenses.
“Potions commonly used throughout the world of Asphial work by allowing their medicinal fluid to penetrate cell membranes, stimulating the nucleus to an abnormal degree and accelerating cell proliferation. The fluid also temporarily compensates for damaged tissue, which is why wounds heal with such unusual speed.”

I had come to a top-secret Saioji Group research facility located near the border between Tokyo and Chiba.
At first glance, it looked like an ordinary factory, but strict security measures and surveillance cameras surrounded the site. Even a legendary mercenary from a certain famous stealth game would probably have a hard time infiltrating the facility. Inside, the company's dedicated researchers worked in conditions that were practically live-in arrangements.
“Yoshida-san, how would you summarize it in simple terms?”
“Well, the potion dramatically enhances the body’s natural healing ability and uses that to heal injuries… something like that.”

The spotless, immaculate facility was filled with people studying the mysterious substances I had brought from Asphial day and night.
Yoshida, the chief researcher in charge of medicinal herb studies, had analyzed the potion I brought and was now explaining the results. Dressed in a white lab coat and black-rimmed glasses, he looked every bit a researcher. Although difficult to see behind the glasses, dark circles were clearly visible beneath his eyes.
Even so, he enthusiastically explained the mechanism behind Asphial-made potions while advancing video footage captured through an electron microscope frame by frame on a tablet.
Unfortunately, I had no specialized knowledge, so even with all his explanations, I understood less than half of what he was saying.

“Is that power really magic, then?”
“Most likely. Even after examining its genetic information, the plants differ only slightly from those on Earth and shouldn’t have such dramatic effects on the human body. Given that, some unknown energy, what you call mana, is probably involved.”

The Saioji Group’s secret facility wasn't just researching the herbs and minerals I brought over. Their greatest focus was observing mana itself.
Both Saioji and I could perceive mana through senses similar to sight and touch. However, people living on Earth—including Yoshida, Akira, and Chairman Ryugen—could not sense mana at all, nor did they possess instruments capable of observing it.
As a result, no matter how detailed the examination, medical tests simply concluded that I was an ordinary human. Of course, if I ran at full speed, I could produce inhuman results in events like the 100-meter dash, shot put, or long jump. Yet the reason for those abilities remained unknown.
For the time being, research was being conducted under the assumption that magical elements, the source of magic, were somehow responsible for these inexplicable phenomena.
And according to Yoshida, the facility was devoting its greatest efforts to developing equipment capable of observing this unknown energy called mana.
“After all, even if we cultivate these herbs in this world, they’re still less effective than those grown in another world.”

“Even so, making that technology public would be worthy of a Nobel Prize. Most of the plants wither away, and they can’t be propagated through cuttings, so mass production is impossible.”
Even in Asphial, medicinal herbs typically grow only in dungeons rich in magical elements or in remote areas far from human settlements.
It was said that the denser the magical elements in the environment where the herbs grew, the stronger their effects became. That alone suggested that mana was deeply connected to the power contained within them.
“However, I think we can expect good results in terms of long-term preservation. Even after heat sterilization, potions don't lose effectiveness, and our tests show that a vacuum environment suppresses the release of the substance known as magical elements.”
Although Earth still lacked the means to directly observe mana, several methods existed to study its properties.
“If there really is a causal relationship between a herb’s magical-element content and its medicinal potency, then potions in the world of Asphial lose roughly half their effectiveness within a week. After that, the decline becomes more gradual.”

“That depends on the sealing material, but even conventional vacuum packaging can preserve them for about a month. On top of that, they become much more compact.”

In Asphial, potions were typically stored in round-bottom glass flasks like those often seen in video games. The reason was simple. Oxygen could seep through most other containers, and some materials would actually deform when exposed to the potion liquid.
Potions also possessed a characteristic whereby their color changed according to their potency, making transparent glass containers especially convenient for identification.
The downside, however, was that they required extreme care during transport. Glass containers were fragile and added considerable weight.
“For now, if commercially available vacuum sealers can produce good results, I think I’ll give them a try.”

“We’ll also investigate materials that can better suppress the release of magical elements. If we find something suitable, we may be able to achieve even better results.”
With Yoshida’s suggestion in mind, I decided to begin developing a new type of potion container.
