Chapter 34: Copen Trading Company
Business is not as simple as merely buying products cheaply and selling them at a higher price.
Buying small quantities as a customer is one thing, but procuring goods in bulk for commercial purposes requires more than just money. It requires trust with producers and wholesalers.
Much of the commerce conducted in the royal capital is built upon these relationships of trust. People do not simply hand over their limited resources to outsiders who have just arrived from elsewhere. Most of those resources are prioritized for merchants and individuals who have maintained business relationships over many years.
That was precisely why Saioji sought to bring an established trading company in the capital under the brigade's umbrella rather than trying to build such connections from scratch.
"...The influence of nobles and royalty is incredible."

"Hm? Did you say something?"
Aina, who was sitting beside me, responded to my muttering.

At the moment, there were only the two of us in the reception room, myself and Aina, who were responsible for supply management within the brigade. We had come to visit a trading company operating in the royal capital. The purpose concerned the daily necessities consumed by the brigade.
Someday I would likely be handling these matters myself, but for now, I lacked both the connections and the manpower. At least at present, it would be difficult to manage the brigade without outside assistance.
After extensive discussions with Saioji, the brigade leader, we had decided to visit the trading company that seemed most beneficial for the Dawnmoon Brigade.
Compared to the reception room at the Eagle Dormitory where I had previously met Rey and Sakakibara, this room was somewhat less luxurious, but it was still impressive enough.

As expected of merchants from the royal capital. The difference between them and the merchants I knew in Erakton was obvious. Even the refreshments prepared for this meeting were the sort of items beyond the reach of ordinary citizens.
"Well, a lot happened, and somehow I ended up becoming acquainted with the heir of the Castiano family and this country's Second Princess."
"...How exactly does someone build connections with a family of magic nobles and a princess of the kingdom?"
We had come today to finalize arrangements regarding a regular procurement quota for daily necessities. Most of the framework had already been decided by Saioji, so only minor adjustments should remain. To that end, I had brought a table showing the quantity of supplies required by the Dawnmoon Brigade.

The figures in that table had been calculated using spreadsheet software, so they were probably accurate. Bringing printer paper from Japan would have looked suspicious, so I had copied everything by hand.
Furthermore, Akira and even accounting personnel from the Saioji Group had helped prepare it, so there should be no problems.

"The calculations are frighteningly precise. Just what I'd expect from someone aiming to become a merchant."
"I didn't do all of it myself."
In reality, the computer at my home in Japan had done most of the calculations automatically. However, explaining the concept of a computer to someone from another world like Aina would be difficult, so I simply implied that someone else had done the calculations.
To be honest, Akira had taught me everything about spreadsheets from the ground up, so I had relied heavily on others.
"Y-Yes! The Copen Trading Company will gladly handle the requested goods!"
"Then please proceed according to these terms."

The president of Copen Trading Company repeatedly bowed his head. For a merchant in the royal capital, he was surprisingly humble.
In this world, businesses were generally named after their owners, so the company president himself was also named Copen.
Although he was a merchant with a shop in the capital, his physique was remarkably sturdy. He looked like someone who regularly performed physical labor, which struck me as somewhat unusual.
"Sir Copen, were you an adventurer by any chance?"
"Yes. I was originally an adventurer... My wife's family has been merchants in the royal capital for generations, so after our marriage, I opened this shop."
He was a former adventurer, while his wife's parents had long been merchants in the capital.

"What kind of business do your in-laws run?"
"The same line as mine, daily necessities. Though theirs targets the city's residents, so the products are somewhat different."

The Copen Trading Company was located not far from the brigade's team house, slightly off the main avenue of the Southern District.
Most prime locations in that district, where adventurers gathered, were occupied by weapon shops, armor stores, and potion dealers.
In contrast, despite being situated away from the main road, the Copen Trading Company still attracted a respectable number of customers through its daily goods business.
Even so, within the Southern District, it would be considered a mid-sized company—or perhaps slightly below that.

What stood out more than anything, however, was Sir Copen's character. Despite me being around twenty years old and Aina still appearing to be of high-school age, he remained extremely polite and treated us very well.
After Saioji's unpleasant experience with the Barn Trading Company, the brigade had begun prioritizing reputation and character over prestige when selecting business partners.
Out of numerous self-recommendations and referrals, we had chosen the Copen Trading Company. As far as I could tell, the rumors were true, and Sir Copen seemed like a genuinely good person.
Of course, in a royal capital full of intrigue, it was possible he presented different faces in public and private. At the very least, however, I felt that someone who did not judge people purely by appearances and instead treated everyone properly was truly valuable.
