Chapter 28: Meeting
“It's said that the Castiano Marquis family has followed the custom of residing in the Great Eagle Dormitory for generations. So Rey Castiano should be there.”
“The Great Eagle Dormitory... we're almost there.”
“Hey, are you sure we shouldn't just go back? Maybe it's one thing for you, but if someone like me tries to meet a noble from one of the Three Great Magical Houses, I could get arrested for disrespect!”
The Three Great Houses... sounds just like P*kémon, I thought to myself.
To ordinary mages like Camille, members of the magical noble families known as the Three Great Magical Houses, such as the Castiano Marquis family, were apparently objects of awe and reverence.

“Meeting a marquis family's heir? That's normally impossible, isn't it...? At best, it should be a knight or maybe the son of a baron whose family is on the verge of collapse.”
Ignoring Camille, who was muttering things equally rude toward both me and the country's nobles, I continued walking toward the Great Eagle Dormitory.

The dormitory was apparently located near the academy's rear gate, directly opposite the main entrance after circling around the grounds.
At Enfive Magic Academy, there were four dormitories: Lion Dormitory, Water Serpent Dormitory, Great Eagle Dormitory, and Shattering Bear Dormitory. By long-standing tradition, members of the royal family and the Three Great Magical Houses were assigned among these residences.
Unlike the reddish Lion Dormitory, the Great Eagle Dormitory was a deep green building. At its gate hung an emblem depicting a yellow eagle against a dark green background.
Passing students came and went as we entered through the gates and stepped onto the dormitory grounds. The lobby was luxurious enough to rival a high-end hotel. Even to an amateur's eye, the furnishings were clearly expensive, and a dedicated concierge stood waiting at the reception desk directly opposite the entrance.

“Excuse me. We'd like to meet Rey Castiano, who resides in this dormitory.”
“May I have your name, please?”
“My name is Allen. The person beside me is accompanying me.”
When I spoke to the concierge stationed in the lobby, he asked for my name, and I answered honestly.

“Yes. Lord Rey has instructed us that if Sir Allen arrives, he is to be escorted to the Second Reception Room. This way, please.”
Stepping out from behind the reception counter, the concierge led us down the corridor to the left of the main entrance.

Several servants were busy cleaning the hallways, but no students could be seen.
“I expect Lord Rey will return to the dormitory within about half an hour. Please wait in this room until then.”
“Understood.”
Classes had already ended, and it was apparently the usual time for students to return.
The clock in the reception room showed it was just after four o'clock.
“...Are you okay?”

“...Thanks for worrying about me, but sadly, no, I'm not okay.”
After the concierge left and the door clicked shut behind him, I checked on Camille. The color had drained from her face. She looked genuinely unwell from nervousness. Even so, she was trying her best to keep herself composed, and seeing that made me feel a little guilty.
The two of us sat in the reception room, listening to the ticking of the clock amid an almost suffocating tension as we waited for Rey Castiano to return. By now, we could hear students returning to the Great Eagle Dormitory outside, so our meeting likely wasn't far off. Just as that thought crossed my mind—
Clack.
“Hey. It's been a while since the street festival.”
The first person to open the door wasn't Rey himself, but someone accompanying him. Then, entering confidently behind him, was the boy with pale golden hair, Rey Castiano.

“Yes. Thank you very much for inviting me to a place like this.”
“...”

I rose from the sofa and gave Rey a polite bow. Beside me, Camille silently stood and bowed at the same time.
“It's fine, it's fine. I was the one who invited you.”
He waved a hand casually, telling us not to worry.
As we exchanged greetings, more people entered the room. First came the guards who had also been present during the street festival. Then another student around Rey's age entered as well.

“...Who are these people?” asked the other student.
“My friends, I guess?”
Rey tilted his head as he answered with uncertainty.
What kind of answer is that? I thought.

The other student, however, looked distinctly displeased.
“You had better have a good reason for summoning me.”

The one speaking was a young girl who addressed Rey—the heir of a great noble house—as an equal... No, from an outsider's perspective, she was practically looking down on him.
She possessed a sharp, intimidating presence. Her hair was the same light-blue color as Camille's, yet hers carried an icy white tint. Combined with her narrow eyes and stern manner of speaking, she gave off an air of cold severity.
“Don't be so angry, Chris... This person might be able to grant your wish, you know?”
“...What?”
At Rey's meaningful remark, the eyes of the girl called Chris grew even sharper.
Her gaze carried enough force that it felt as though she could kill someone with it alone. It was certainly not the aura one would expect from a girl barely fifteen years old.
