Chapter 23: The Appeal of Trading Cards
Nom.
The young noble Rey stuffed the chocolate into his small mouth and chewed thoughtfully, savoring its sweetness and aroma.
The guards watching him looked anxious at first, but seeing that nothing unusual happened, they seemed somewhat relieved.
“This is incredible!”
“I'm glad it suits your taste.”

The chocolate evidently hadn't completely melted yet, making Rey's words a bit difficult to understand, but his enthusiasm was unmistakable.
“Lord Rey, it is poor manners to speak while food is still in your mouth.”

The guards gently reprimanded him, while Rey himself looked thoroughly excited. The commotion attracted the attention of other people in Area 13, who began gathering around to see what was happening.
Yeah, just as I thought. Earth-made sweets work even in this world.
Sweets came in endless varieties, from Western confectioneries to traditional Japanese treats. If I ever found the time, it might be worthwhile to travel across Japan and collect specialties from all over the country.
“How much does one box cost?”

“A box containing eight chocolates sells for 30,000 Gold.”
I gave a slight bow and quoted the price of the chocolate used for sampling. In Japan, it would belong to the luxury category—something around 5,000 yen per box.
There were even more expensive varieties available, but for this trial run, I'd imported the store's most popular product.
“Only 30,000 Gold? That's surprisingly cheap.”

“We're offering it at a special promotional price to help introduce chocolate to the public.”
“Really? Then I'd like to buy all of them. I'd like to give some to Father, Mother, my sister, and various acquaintances.”

As he spoke, Rey signaled to one of the guards standing nearby to make the payment.
“...You've paid quite a bit more than necessary. Is that alright?”
“Don't worry about it. Consider it compensation for surprising me.”
The small pouch handed over by the guard contained roughly 500,000 Gold.
I had only prepared ten boxes of chocolate, so even at full price the total should have been 300,000 Gold. Yet Rey casually offered half a million.
His sense of money is ridiculous. Is this what being nobility is like?

Apparently, that first piece of chocolate had sparked his interest in everything else. He examined the various goods displayed at my stall and repeatedly asked for explanations. The sight of him questioning everything with pure curiosity was exactly what one would expect from a child. And since he had the potential to become an extremely valuable customer in the future, I carefully explained each item one by one.
“So, what's this paper bag?”
Perhaps this was the power of nobility at work. He had been purchasing practically every item I explained, and the total amount spent had already exceeded one million Gold.
In Asphial, the common currency, Gold, held buying power roughly comparable to Japanese yen.
For example, a pork skewer sold in Area 1 cost around 700 Gold. As a festival price, that was surprisingly similar to what one might pay in Japan, making the value easy for a former Japanese person like myself to grasp.
In modern Japanese terms, it was roughly equivalent to a middle-school-aged boy casually spending over a million yen at a somewhat upscale event stall.

“This is a product called TCG, a trading card game. Each pack contains five random cards. The game is played by preparing a deck of forty or more cards. The detailed rules can be found in this book—”
“Mm. I'll buy all of those too.”

“...I see. Thank you for your purchase.”
Regarding card games, I already knew that playing cards existed in this world. Some transported people from Earth had probably introduced them long ago. Because the concept of card games was already familiar, explaining M*G was much easier.
That said, I wasn't particularly knowledgeable about trading card games myself, so I had included official rulebooks alongside the card packs.
Even with an existing foundation, trading card games were complicated systems.

In the case of M*G, there were multiple colors of magic, each with unique characteristics; the concept of mana costs; various special abilities attached to individual cards; extensive flavor text tied to the setting and lore; and alternate illustrations and differing rarity levels, even among identical cards.
To be honest, I had read through the rules sufficiently to sell the product, but I certainly hadn't memorized everything. That was precisely why I was selling rulebooks. Still, seeing someone purchase everything so readily without even questioning it left me feeling conflicted.
“Wow. These illustrations are beautiful.”
Rey immediately opened one of the packs he had purchased and flipped through the five cards inside.

“...Five cards with artwork of this quality for only 3,000 Gold?”
“Is this another one of those special prices? If so, I might buy a pack as a souvenir.”
Е nůmа̂
Not only Rey, but even the guards surrounding him stared at the cards in admiration.
Well, that's understandable. Back on Earth, these would never sell for this price.
A standard pack costing 3,000 yen would be absurdly expensive if it weren't some rare out-of-print product. Back in Japan, people would probably talk about it solely because of the outrageous price. However, values worked differently in this world.
Food prices were relatively similar to those in Japan. If anything, food was often cheaper in Asphial. Gold and silver were likewise less valuable here. Books and paintings, on the other hand, could soar to astronomical prices.
Considering that, perhaps trading cards—with their beautiful illustrations—were actually unbelievably cheap when judged by the standards of this world.
