Chapter 17: The World Beyond (Part 2)
In truth, my relationship with Saioji was more that of collaborators. However, since I was officially a member of the adventurer team that Saioji Shizuku led, I explained it as me working under her as an employee serves an employer.
At my words, Chairman Ryugen stroked his chin thoughtfully.
“So, what is my daughter doing on the other side of this gate?”
“Beyond the gate lies another world. A fantasy world with swords and magic. She has formed an adventurer team there and is active as its leader.”
Akira and the large man in black both looked at me as if to say, Are you serious?

“Another world, huh... Ordinarily, I would find that difficult to believe. But now that this mysterious phenomenon called the Moon Gate exists before my eyes, I suppose I have little choice but to accept it.”
“...So the sleeping gas we pumped into the back seat didn't work because of some kind of otherworldly magic?”

“Well, something like that.”
In reality, my resistance to the sleeping gas had nothing to do with magic. It was simply the result of my own physical abilities. But explaining that would only make things more confusing, so I gave a vague answer.
“In other words, you can come to this world, but because you have no legal identity, you can't get a job. And since you can't earn money, you want my cooperation. Is that correct?”
“Yes. According to the agreement I made with your daughter, I would provide goods from Japan, and in return, she would support me in the other world... Asphial.”

Originally, my goal in contacting Saioji had been to receive support from someone who possessed real influence in Asphial and use that backing to establish a business there.
However, once we started working out the details, it became clear that my ability to acquire goods on Earth was extremely limited. Put simply, in Japan, I was essentially an illegal resident with no family registry. I couldn't legally work.
At best, I could help out around Akane Village and rely on Kida-kun—who was knowledgeable about the internet—to order things online for me. That was about all I could do.
But operating that way meant even buying a single book took an absurd amount of time. On top of that, my only source of income was helping elderly villagers with odd jobs, which was hardly reliable.

Recognizing the problem, Saioji and I came up with a plan. I would let her parents know she was safe, while Chairman Ryugen would help make it easier for me to operate on Earth. I explained all of this to him.
“You can't keep the gate open indefinitely, can you?”

“No. The cost of maintaining it is extremely high. Keeping it open continuously while running a wired connection through it would be difficult.”
The skill I possessed, Interworld Travel, was so costly that it could be considered a grand spell even by Asphial's standards. Well, crossing between worlds naturally qualified as something extraordinary.
I had even borrowed a smartphone and attempted to make calls from the Asphial side, but no signal could pass through. Using cables instead wasn't practical either, because keeping the Moon Gate open for long periods was almost impossible. Compared to setting up some elaborate cable system like a giant tin-can telephone, simply exchanging letters was far more efficient.
“Hmm. I think I have a general understanding of your ability now. Before you leave, I'll give you a smartphone specifically for your use. Could you take photos or videos of my daughter with it?”
“That much shouldn't be a problem. She seemed curious about Japan as well.”
The small, flat device called a smartphone hadn't existed in my time. After learning how to use it, though, I found it surprisingly fascinating.

Unlike the mobile phones I remembered, it could do far more than make calls—it could take beautiful photographs and videos.
The plan was simple: I would photograph Shizuku and bring back evidence.
If I could do that, Chairman Ryugen promised that both he and the Saioji Group would offer their full cooperation.
“It may take some time. We've recently relocated our base, so things are a bit chaotic right now...”
“There's no need to rush. I've raised my daughter as a member of the Saioji family—someone who must someday stand at the top. If she's entered a new land, she should understand the importance of building a solid foundation rather than rushing ahead recklessly.”
Apparently, people referred to that kind of upbringing as teiōgaku[1]—the education of future leaders.

Afterward, I answered a number of fatherly questions about what kind of life Saioji was living on the other side of the Moon Gate.
Once our discussion was finished, I returned to the world of Asphial.
