Chapter 16: The World Beyond (Part 1)
The moment I swallowed nervously, Chairman Ryugen pulled out a single letter.
It was the very letter I had mailed on Saioji Shizuku's behalf.
“This letter contains a coded message that only members of the family can use. Furthermore, it was sent to a confidential address that delivers directly to me. The only people capable of using something like this would be members of the Saioji family or high-ranking executives within the Group.”
Waving the letter as he spoke, Ryugen smiled.
“When it first arrived from someone claiming to be my daughter, I was genuinely shocked.”

“...I see. So that's why Saioji said everything would be fine.”
“The postmark narrowed down the area considerably. Once we knew it came from a remote village called Akane and was connected to a large Western-looking man, identifying you wasn't particularly difficult.”

Fair enough, I thought, silently agreeing with him and encouraging him to continue. At some point, Akira had also moved to stand on my other side.
“You see, Akira here is my daughter Shizuku's personal attendant. She originally worked as a maid at the main estate, but after Shizuku disappeared, she worked very hard. Now she's entrusted with the role of a fully-fledged bodyguard.”
“...Chairman Ryugen, do you really believe this man knows where the young lady is?”

That made sense. A chairman's daughter whose family's assets easily exceeded trillions would naturally attract people with malicious intentions. As a result, Ryugen had always employed guards to watch over her.
Well, she was transported to another world. No amount of protection could have stopped that.
Chairman Ryugen described her disappearance as if she had been spirited away. From my perspective, knowing the truth, that description was almost perfectly accurate. Saioji Shizuku had literally been taken to another world.

Chairman Ryugen let out an exaggerated sigh of relief.
Even though he still had not seen his daughter, it was obvious how happy he was simply to have obtained a clue about her whereabouts. Combined with his dramatic gestures, he looked almost like an actor performing on stage.
“By the way, is this room free of listening devices and recording equipment?”
“It is. The conference room can't be seen from the hotel across the street due to the viewing angle, and the surrounding area is secured by guards.”
In that case, it should be safe.

With a sudden whoom sound, a door shrouded in white mist materialized out of thin air.
For a brief moment, Akira and the large bodyguard standing beside me moved as if to intervene, apparently fearing I was attempting something suspicious. However, Chairman Ryugen raised a hand and stopped them.
“This is a gate created by a power I possess. Through this gate, it is possible to reach the place where your daughter currently resides.”

“...And what conditions are required to use it?”
“The condition is that the traveler must not be a living being. At present, I'm the only one capable of passing through it.”
“May I touch it?”
“Of course.”

Deeply intrigued by the mist-covered Moon Gate that had appeared in the conference room, Chairman Ryugen approached it.
Akira looked ready to stop him the moment he reached out, but Chairman Ryugen ignored her concern and placed his hand against the gate.

“Hmm. It appears to be covered in mist, yet when I touch it, it feels like a perfectly smooth slab of marble without the slightest unevenness.”
As he repeatedly patted its surface, the two bodyguards watched anxiously. Akira, who moments earlier had possessed the sharp eyes of an assassin, now looked completely flustered as her master casually touched something utterly unknown.
“Your daughter is on the other side of that gate. As for me, I currently work in that world as one of her subordinates.”
And with those words, I decided to reveal a portion of the power I possessed.
