Chapter 15: The Saioji Group

At the very least, Japan in the era when I was alive had been a peaceful country. That was why I was internally shocked that Akira was giving off killing intent sharper than even the assassins of Asphial.

The car we were riding in was equipped with a transparent partition separating the front and rear seats, just like a taxi.

“...Three years ago, after classes ended for the day, Young Lady Shizuku was supposed to be waiting for her ride home, then she vanished without a trace. It was practically a modern-day case of being spirited away. Even with the full power of the Saioji Group, we couldn't find her.”

I had no idea where she got it, but the tired look on Akira's face disappeared instantly. Her eyes sharpened to a level that would put the assassins of Asphial to shame as she pulled a handgun from inside her black suit.

It wasn't a revolver like the police typically carried. It was clearly a semi-automatic pistol imported from overseas.

“...Come on, Akira-san, calm down. I'm not an enemy of the Saioji family. If anything, I'm her ally... perhaps the only one in this world.”

To be honest, I was confident I could kick open the locked car door with my reincarnator strength. Even if I were shot at point-blank range, I doubted it would be a serious problem.

A magnum might hurt, though.

Ordinary people couldn't do such things, of course. But transmigrants and reincarnates were granted powerful skills, immense magical power, and superhuman physiques—as though it were compensation for being dragged into the inconvenient world of Asphial.

That's why a handgun wasn't a threat to me. Still, escaping would likely be interpreted as an unmistakable act of hostility, so I raised both hands in surrender.

Yet Akira's stern expression remained unchanged.

“What kind of monster are you? The back seat should already be filled with a high-concentration sleeping gas. How are you still sitting there like nothing's wrong?”

Her speech had become noticeably rougher.

Only then did I realize the true purpose of the transparent divider. It wasn't just for convenience—it completely sealed off the driver's area from the rear compartment so the gas couldn't reach her.

In other words, the entire back seat functioned as a custom-built cage designed to incapacitate suspicious individuals like me.

“...”

The road to Saiba Town was narrow and winding through the mountains, but thanks to Akira's skilled driving, the trip was surprisingly comfortable.

Saiba Town, the nearest town to Akane Village, lay along the Etsumi-Nan Railway Line. While it didn't have many commercial facilities, it featured large residential neighborhoods and a population slightly over ten thousand.

Around Saiba Station stood a nostalgic shopping district, business hotels catering to traveling professionals, halls used for various events, and even a free multistory parking garage nearby.

This is amazing... It looks like something straight out of a manga.

Even so, it was a weekday afternoon, and few people walked the streets. The taxi drivers waiting outside the station looked bored as they drank canned coffee from vending machines.

In one otherwise ordinary corner of town, however, several intimidating black luxury cars were parked in a row, the kind that looked more suited to a district like Nagatacho or Kabukicho.

The sight alone was bizarre. The few pedestrians passing by couldn't help but watch from a distance, wondering what was happening.

After spending a long time in the sleeping-gas-filled back seat and enduring a tense silence with no chance for casual conversation, we finally arrived at a certain building in Saiba Town.

Around the building stood a number of large men in black suits. They looked so much like members of some underworld gathering that it was hard not to think of organized crime. Every single one of them stared intently at Akira's car as it arrived.

“...Get out. Our master is waiting for you.”

Akira spoke briefly and bluntly.

Click.

The rear door opened.

“This way. Chairman Ryugen is waiting.”

Standing before the door was an enormous man even larger than me, wearing a full-face gas mask and breathing with a loud shhhk sound.

Oh right... the rear compartment is filled with sleeping gas.

I had no idea how they had obtained or modified something like this, but perhaps such things were easy for an organization as powerful as the Saioji Group.

Apparently, the sleeping gas they had used was potent enough to put even an enraged bear into a deep sleep. It was colorless, odorless, and impossible to detect even when the air was saturated with it.

That explained why Akira was so shocked that I remained unaffected. Her level of caution toward me had been extremely high ever since.

The building I was led into stood only a short distance from Saiba Station.

A five-story structure wasn't particularly unusual in a city, but Saiba Town was mostly residential despite being more developed than Akane Village.

On the top floor was a spacious, practical conference room furnished with neatly aligned long tables and a large projector at the front. The side furthest from the entrance featured a panoramic view overlooking the entire town. From here, the only structure larger than the building we occupied was the hotel near the station.

“I've brought him, Chairman Ryugen.”

The large man in black removed his gas mask after entering the building and escorted me to the conference room. Standing by the window was a middle-aged man wearing a navy-blue suit.

Compared to me and the giant bodyguard beside me, Chairman Ryugen appeared rather thin. He was probably around the high 170-centimeter range in height. Compared to my roughly 190-centimeter frame—and the black-suited giant who was likely over two meters tall—he seemed somewhat frail.

“So you're Allen-kun... You're exactly as my daughter described in her letter.”

In terms of physical build, he couldn't compare to either me or the giant bodyguard, yet the aura surrounding him was something completely beyond that of an ordinary person.

I had felt a similar pressure from Saioji Shizuku, but the overwhelming presence radiating from the man before me was on an entirely different level. The suffocating sense of intimidation was almost tangible.

Oh crap... I may have gotten involved with someone truly dangerous.

The moment I met the man known as Chairman Ryugen, I couldn't help but feel a twinge of regret.
