Chapter 11: Night at the Camp

The Dawnmoon Brigade set up camp around a massive bonfire that looked almost like a campfire festival. Although the campsite was shared by many travelers, there was still a hierarchy among its users. Large merchant groups could secure better spots, and higher-ranked adventurers were also entitled to more favorable locations.

The campsite was laid out in a square shape, and the brigade had taken a position near one of the corners close to the entrance. A total of eight four-person tents had been erected, but Saioji, the leader of the group, slept alone in a particularly large tent.

And since every member of the brigade was female... being the only man, I naturally felt a bit out of place. So on this very first night of the journey, I volunteered for the night watch.

“While we were walking earlier today, I came up with a new magical formula and tried it just now, but it failed spectacularly!!”

“So the huge explosion during dinner cleanup was your fault?!”

Including me, five people were assigned to keep watch and make sure the dinner fire stayed lit. The group consisted of two warriors, one scout, one mage, and myself.

Normally, there would be two scouts on watch duty, but since I was participating this time, the lineup was two warriors, one scout, and one mage.

It wasn't just our brigade providing guards. Other adventurer parties in the campsite did the same. Merchant caravans, however, usually had everyone sleep. Since people without combat experience weren't very effective at standing watch, caravan groups generally didn't assign anyone to the task.

Around us, the faint lights of other adventurers on watch flickered in the darkness.

“Hm? What's wrong, Allen?”

“...Nothing. I just thought everyone disliked me more than this. I'm surprised that I can actually sit here and join the conversation during watch duty.”

As I muttered that, everyone sitting around the fire let out a collective “Ahh,” as if they finally understood.

Honestly, what Saioji had done was force a decision on the brigade without consulting the members. This was an all-female adventurer team. Some people might have valued that aspect, and others might even have joined because they disliked men.

Given that, I had assumed I wouldn't be particularly welcome. In a group of more than thirty people, I was the only member of the opposite sex. Setting aside my own discomfort, I figured at the very least people would avoid me.

As I listened to the crackling firewood, I wanted to hear what the members actually thought of me. Worrying about their opinions probably wouldn't change much, but it seemed better than blindly stumbling into conflict, so I decided to ask honestly.

“I don't really mind. Whether you're a man or a woman, if you can contribute to the brigade, then you're welcome in my book.”

“That's right. People around us spread rumors about us hating men and things like that, but the Dawnmoon Brigade isn't that kind of group.”

The two women sitting across the fire answered. One was Luca, recognizable by her short dark-red hair and exceptionally ample chest. The other was Lazuli, a slender scout with long blue hair.

They felt like fire and water respectively. I learned that they had joined the brigade around the same time. Luca wielded a greatsword nearly as large as herself, while Lazuli used a simple, slender bow resembling a Japanese longbow.

Both were outstanding adventurers. People in this world generally possessed physical abilities superior to those on Earth, but just as on Earth, differences between men and women still existed. Because of that, it was easy to assume that most successful adventurers would be men. However, women often possessed greater magical power, so although their roles differed, the gap in overall capability wasn't actually that large.

That made Ryuka and Lazuli especially impressive. They had deliberately chosen physically demanding professions—warrior and scout respectively—and were veteran members known for their accomplishments.

“Maybe Vice Captain Laphine is an exception, but among the veteran members, there aren't many who truly hate men. Some of the newer girls might have those kinds of thoughts, though.”

“Laphine...?”

At Luca's words, I recalled the woman named Laphine.

Unlike the captain, Saioji, whose beautiful jet-black hair seemed to melt into the darkness, Laphine had silver hair so pale it resembled moonlight. Rather than being cute, both women were the elegant, cool type. When I'd first met them, I couldn't help thinking they were the sort of women who would be popular with other women.

“Well, even though Laphine dislikes men, she doesn't randomly pick fights with them. Besides, she's completely devoted to the captain, so it shouldn't be a problem.”

“I think the others are the same. More than dislike, it's probably just a competitive spirit toward the opposite sex.”

“I see.”

Hearing that put me somewhat at ease.

“Hey, hey, but what I really wanted to ask is... how did you win the captain's heart, Allen?”

“Win her heart...? It wasn't anything special. I just showed her something interesting that I happened to have.”

“What is it?! I want to see!”

The one shouting excitedly was Camille, the light-blue-haired mage who had failed her newly invented spell earlier and left a massive crater just outside the campsite. Her eyes practically radiated curiosity.

Even Aida, a large, imposing woman about my size who had remained silent the entire time, kept glancing in my direction. It seemed everyone around the fire was interested.

...Would it be okay to show them?

E̊ n um̂а̀

Camille was the only one openly leaning forward and shaking my shoulders in excitement, but the others clearly wanted to see it too.

I was planning to sell it in the royal capital anyway. Maybe I should see how they react to it.

Earlier that day, Saioji had warned me that if she got hold of it, I might never get it back. Still, I had been considering selling manga and novels—starting with Yume Koi—in the royal capital, so this seemed like a good opportunity to gauge their reactions.

“Alright. But this stays a secret between us.”

“Got it!!”

I didn't want the commotion spreading too far, so I placed a finger against my lips and gestured for everyone to keep quiet. Everyone nodded in agreement. Only then did I reach into my bag and pull out Yume Koi Volume 1.
