Chapter 1: The Power to Travel Between Worlds
At some point, I was reincarnated into a fantasy world. At first, I was confused, but once I realized I had actually been reborn in another world, I couldn't contain my joy. Even though life there was far less convenient than modern-day Japan, I believed I would finally be able to enjoy the fantasy world I had always dreamed of.
However, the skill I possessed was not the kind that could make me a hero or a legendary champion.
[Interworld Travel]
It was an extremely rare skill that allowed me to travel between various worlds.
With Interworld Travel, I could cross the boundaries of worlds and visit all sorts of places. Worlds where dinosaurs still ruled the earth, or highly advanced science-fiction worlds even more developed than the modern society I once knew.

It took an incredible amount of effort, but I eventually found the world where Earth from my previous life existed.
After spending years searching for it, I finally arrived in a quiet rural area somewhere in Japan. I had no idea which prefecture it was or exactly where I had landed, but the peaceful countryside atmosphere was unmistakable. As I stood there in a daze in a place completely unfamiliar to me, my eyes happened to catch sight of an old, weathered bus stop with Japanese writing on it.

By then, I had already spent nearly twenty years living in another world, so seeing Japanese for the first time in so long overwhelmed me. The memory is still vivid—I collapsed to my knees and cried.
To make matters worse, an elderly farmer working nearby called out to me and even treated me to lunch. That made me cry even more.
Having finally succeeded in finding Earth, I thought about settling down in Japan permanently. But when I considered it more carefully, I realized something important: unlike in my previous life, I now possessed the body of someone born in another world.
I first noticed it during lunch when the old man casually said, "For a foreigner, your Japanese is really good."

The moment I heard those words, I suddenly realized something. I had been communicating in various worlds without thinking about it, but in my mind, everything had always been automatically translated into the Japanese I was familiar with.
Even in the fantasy world that had become my second hometown, I perceived everyone as speaking Japanese. Until the old man pointed it out, I had never seriously considered the issue of language barriers.
I figured this phenomenon was probably due to some kind of translation skill.
After all, since I already possessed the absurd ability to travel between worlds, having an automatic translation skill wasn't that hard to believe. At least, that's how I chose to rationalize it.

There was another issue: my appearance.
...Yeah, I look completely Western.

The body I had been born into in the fantasy world was nothing like that of a Japanese person. Instead, I had the sharply defined features typically associated with Europeans.
At the very least, my current appearance was that of a foreigner in plain clothes, not a Japanese man.
Over the course of my travels between worlds, I also discovered several things.
First, no living creature other than myself could cross between worlds.
The criterion seemed to be whether something was alive or dead. The gate that appeared whenever I activated my skill—a doorway between worlds known as the [Moon Gate]—would not allow any living being other than me to pass through.
However, dead things could pass.

As an experiment, I tried sending a frog from a rice paddy through the Moon Gate. The living frog was immediately repelled by the gate.
On the other hand, when I tossed in a roadside stone—or a flattened frog that had been run over—it passed through normally, and a dead Japanese frog ended up in the fantasy world.
From these discoveries, I sensed limitless possibilities.
My Interworld Travel skill lacked the power to defeat mighty monsters, but countless ways of making money through interworld trade began to occur to me.
For example, the fantasy world where I currently lived—Asphial—was a classic fantasy setting: a medieval European-style world combined with swords and magic.
Because magic existed and powerful monsters roamed everywhere, scientific development had lagged terribly behind.

The worst aspect was sanitation.
There were no baths.

No flush toilets.
Learning that nearly broke me.
Fortunately, thanks to my world-traveling skill, I could regularly visit Japan and enjoy a proper public bathhouse.
To be honest, I didn't have much money. At best, I earned a little pocket money helping old farmers in the countryside with field work, so I couldn't afford frequent trips to bathhouses.

But that was when I noticed the difference in the value of goods between Asfial and Japan.
Take gold, for example.
Throughout history, gold has captivated people, and a single gold bar can be worth enough to build a house.
Yet in Asphial, gold wasn't nearly as valuable.

It was still considered a relatively expensive mineral, but nowhere near as outrageous as on Earth. You wouldn't find it sold at roadside stalls, but a small mineral merchant in town could sell you a decently sized gold bar for roughly a month's wages.
What was truly valuable in Asfial were things like spices and sweets.

Thinking this was typical fantasy-world logic, I asked merchants I knew and looked into it more carefully.
Spices were expensive enough, but sweets made with sugar were astonishingly costly.
A single box of cookies worth about 100 yen in a supermarket could buy a healthy horse.
Spices were guarded more carefully than gold.
As for a luxurious cake loaded with sugar, it might be valuable enough to build a house.
And so, I decided to travel between worlds, buy goods in one world, and resell them in another for profit.

But then I ran into a major problem.
"What am I supposed to do? I don't even have legal identification..."
